Jacques Clement (1567 – 1589)

Jacques Clément is a friar of the Dominican order. A Catholic fanatic, he took the side of the League during the wars of religion. He plans to assassinate King Henry III who was excommunicated by the Pope and who had the Duke of Guise assassinated. It is in Saint Cloud that he meets him, he pretends to give him a confidential message and then takes out a knife which he sticks in the king's belly. Henri III exclaims "Wicked monk, you killed me!", the royal guard, the Forty-five, are alerted and pierce the monk with their swords. The king will succumb during the following night. Jacques Clément suffered the post-mortem punishment of the regicides, so he was quartered and then cremated. The news of the assassination was greeted enthusiastically in Paris and also by Pope Sixtus V who was planning to canonize him. This is the first voluntary regicide in France.
