Historical story

SS brick factory

In 1939 the SS launched the construction of the largest brick factory in the world at the time. The objective of this factory was to enrich the organization thanks to the sale of construction material to the Reich for the great remodeling works of the cities that were intended to be carried out.

The factory was built by prisoners from Sachsenhausen and operated by the same workforce. Although the factory was located on a natural source of clay, its low quality prevented the full use of the industry, so it was a partial failure.

1500 prisoners were employed in the construction of the place, whose main facility corresponded to a large concrete industrial building of 44,000 square meters. The factory employed 2,000 Sachsenhausen prisoners at its peak.

How to get to the SS Brick Factory

The old SS brick factory is located a short distance from the main camp memorial. You can walk from the memorial, or take the 805 bus to the Oranienburg, Schleuse stop. You can check the best route to get there in the following LINK.

What can you see

The land of the old factory currently belongs to a construction material company, so access is restricted. At the entrance of the place there is an outdoor exhibition where the history of the historic place is told.

The complex's guardhouse is also still standing, which is abandoned and can be visited, although it has not been turned into a museum.
