Saccharin:When and by whom was it invented?

Saccharin

The discovery of saccharin, a well-known and widespread sweetener, dates back to 1879 and it happened, as it happened many other times, by pure chance.

To the chemist Constantin Fahlberg in fact, it was enough to simply eat a sandwich while he was returning from his laboratory.

Biting his snack, the man realized that it was sweeter than usual and this was due to the presence on his hands, precisely, of saccharin, a substance deriving from the oxidation of toluene, which he used for his studies on coal tar.

Since then this element became one of the most widely used sweeteners almost everywhere and enjoyed great success even during the two world wars.
