Lunda traded with both the Arabs on Indian Ocean and from about 1650 with the Portuguese on the Atlantic. The main exports were ivory and slaves; Imports include cloth and weapons. The empire reached its peak of power in the 1850s. After that, its power was increased by the incursions of the neighboring Undermine Chokwe . Portuguese troops arrived from Angola in the west and Belgians from the in 1884 Congo Free State in Northeast 1898. Lunda was divided between them. Guerrilla warfare against the Congo Free State lasted until 1909, when the Lunda leaders were captured and executed.
