Kingdom of Anziku | historical kingdom, Africa

Kingdom of Anziku , also Kingdom called Teke, or Tyo Kingdom , historical African state on and north of the Congo near Malebo Pool . The Teke lived early on in the region's high plains. It is not known when they organized themselves as a kingdom, but by 1600 their state was a rival to the Congo kingdom south of the river. Anziku controlled the lower Congo and extended northwest to the upper Kouilou-Niari Basin. He dominated domestic trade. especially the trade in slaves. Traditional handicrafts were gradually abandoned in favor of products imported from Europe in exchange for slaves. In 1880, King Iloo signed a treaty with French colonialist Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza that made Anziku a French protectorate. Eleven years later (1891) it became the French (middle) Congo. Anziku historical area now forms the central part of the Republic of Congo and includes the location of Brazzaville, the state capital.
