archaeological essence

Chicken manure prison was built during the reign of King Chulalongkorn. By the French troops who came to capture Chanthaburi during that period (1893 B.E.) used it as a turret and a prison for people. by locking people below and raising chickens on top Let the chickens defecate the prisoners' heads. Therefore, it is called chicken manure prison.

The ancient site is a brick building with mortar. The base plan is a square shape with a length of 4 meters on each side, but the building has cut corners on all 4 sides, resulting in an octagonal plan with 1 entrance door on the west side. The door frame is made of wood. There are window openings on all 4 sides, 8 on each side, divided into 4 upper and 4 lower. In addition, at the corner of the building, there are 2 more window openings, 1 upper and 1 lower. The appearance of the window when viewed from the outside looks tall, narrow, cylindrical. But when viewed from the inside, the window is square. In addition, at the central and upper part of the building, there are holes for inserting wooden beams. This is consistent with historical data that says the building has two floors, with the upper floor being wooden floors. It was originally used as a turret by the French soldiers. But later, the lower floor was used as a prison for people. The upper layer is for raising chickens for the chickens to defecate on the prisoners. And there used to be water around the building on 3 sides, but water eroded the wall on one side. The current condition was restored by the Fine Arts Department in 1972.
