Charles II the Bald (823 - 877)

Son of Ludwig I and Judith of Bavaria. Influenced by his wife, Louis favors Charles to the detriment of his eldest sons from a first marriage:Lothaire, Pépin and Louis le Germanique. After the death of their father, Charles the Bald allies himself with Louis the Germanic and defeats Lothaire and Pépin II (son of Pépin who died in 838) at Fontenoy en Puisaye (841). In 843 the Treaty of Verdun divided the empire into three. Charles receives the territories of western Gaul where his authority is not recognized everywhere. The Normans ravaging the country, Charles entrusts the command of the country (862) to the Count of Anjou Robert le Fort who initially hostile agrees to defend the kingdom against the Bretons and the Normans. Crowned emperor by Pope John VIII, Charles the Bald died in 877. He left the kingdom to his son Louis II the Stammerer.
