Ludwig II the German (804 - 876)

Third son of Louis the Pious and Irmingarde, king of Bavaria in 817. In 829, Louis the German joins forces with his brothers Lothaire and Pépin against his father. The emperor being dead, it is Lothair who takes the title, Louis therefore allies himself with Charles to put an end to his hegemony. The two brothers won the battle of Fontenay-en-Puisaye in 841, then they took the oath of Strasbourg (842). The division of Verdun (843) decides on the division of the Empire, Louis obtains the eastern part of the kingdom. He never lost sight of the center and west of the old Carolingian Empire. Solicited by the Aquitaine, he tries to invade the kingdom of Charles the Bald. The two brothers reconciled by sharing Lotharingia. On his death, his son Charles le Gros succeeded him.
