Jacques Roux(1752 - 1794)

A priest in 1789, he took the oath to the civil constitution of the clergy the following year. He accompanied Louis XVI to the guillotine. The economic crisis favored its growth within popular circles. His Enragés movement demanded strict rules for aristocrats. He enthusiastically denounced the rich who had profited from the Revolution. His movement worried the Convention and even the sans-culottes of the Commune. Arrested in 1793 to be tried by the revolutionary tribunal, Roux stabbed himself in his cell.
