One can understand why the "Athens Free" events for the liberation of Athens from the Nazis will not take place this year due to the pandemic. Not easily, given that technology offers possibilities to overcome even such great obstacles, but, after all, one can show a relative understanding.
However, to "fall" the site of the events which was in the air for the last five years and "hosted" a very important value (historical) material because someone did not feel honored to give an amount of 40-50 euros, is too much. It's infuriating. And it becomes more infuriating because this year, after the developments in the Golden Dawn trial, there was a great interest from teachers and the public to gain access to this material.
In the previous years, until October 2019, that is, the relevant, ridiculous, amount came from the coffers of the Attica Region. In 2020 this was not possible and typing www.freeathens44.org leads to the disgusting white page.
The historian Menelaos Charalambidis, who supervised the events with his team, commented on Facebook:"It is sad because the material of this site (photos, documents, testimonies, audio-visual material, documentaries, etc.) was used by dozens of teachers to organize the holidays in their schools, not for the 12th, but for the 28th of October and of course thousands of our fellow citizens.
So it is not an annulment, but an erasure of the manifestations of those who taught us to see our past differently, creatively and meaningfully. Nothing at all was planned, planned or organized for it to be cancelled. It's just that the five co-organizers let these events die".
In the previous five years, the events, which were loved by the city and its people, were supported by the Municipality of Athens, the Region of Attica, ERT and the Foundation of the Hellenic Parliament. This year there was not the slightest interest from anyone, not even a phone call.
And finally we even reached the point of "throwing" the site since the server was apparently not paid.
