Adikopnigmeni and Yagades:Two rebetika stories by Dimitris Mystakidis

The "rebetikas of the guitar" of Dimitris Mistakidis are coming on Tuesday, July 21 to Technopolis, to give "air" to this year which has been marked by cancellations of events and concerts, due to the pandemic.

"In the special circumstances we live in, the joy of being together again gives us strength and optimism" says the creator and in this message, the whole essence is hidden.

On the occasion of his concert, Dimitris Mystakidis, presents to News 24/7 two rebetika stories.

The first story concerns the maritime tragedy of the summer of 1937 in the port of Piraeus that inspired Costas Roukounas to write "the drowned", a song that was immediately censored by the Metaxas dictatorship. The reasons, reasonable, as at that time when there was no social media, the failures of governments were spread by word of mouth and became a song by the rabbis of the time.

The second story concerns the Giagades, the four brothers from Marathokambos in Samos who messed with the authorities, were murdered and eventually heroized by the people of the island. Roukounas wrote an entire trilogy about the Giagades.

The suffocated

On August 1, 1937, the diesel-powered steamer "Anastasis" departs with 45 passengers from the port of Aegina bound for Piraeus.

Two hours later and with ideal conditions he approaches the mouth of the port.

A little while ago, the steamship Hydra left Piraeus bound for Astros of Kynouria.

The lack of navigational rules and the urging of passengers to reach their destination faster, forces the captain of the Hydra to change the ship's course and exit the left channel, a space normally used by ships entering the port.

At a quarter past 10 and at a distance of 300 meters from the coast, opposite the country center of Manolis Parlamas, the two boats found themselves on a head-on collision course. "Crow with crow" as it is said in the language of sailors.

The captain of "Anastasis" tried to avoid the collision by turning the steering wheel all the way to the left, since the rocky shoals of the area were on the right, but he didn't make it. The steamer nailed on its starboard fender and lifted it into the air. The tragedy could have stopped there, but the Hydra's captain gave the command "all over" and forced the wooden sloop to break free and sink immediately, dragging 28 people to their deaths.

On the occasion of the tragic event, Kostas Roukounas wrote the song "the drowned" which was banned almost immediately by the Metaxas censorship.

On the outskirts of Samos

The Giagades were 4 brothers from Marathokambos, Samos. George, John, Kimonas and Kostas. Not to mention, the Giagades put up with all the forms of power that existed in Samos, whether Turkish or Greek, from 1912 to 1927.

In their 3rd skirmish in a row, this time with the Venizelian state in the mountainous village of Kosmadaioi on the slopes of Mount Kerki, the first of the brothers, George, is killed by detachments of Cretan gendarmes sent by Venizelos to the island. The same night the village is set on fire and many residents - among them the younger sister of the Giagades Dimitra - are executed. Two days later in Marathokampos of Amyni, the children burn alive the old mother of the Giagades.

The epilogue was written in 1927 when the wanted man Kostas Giagas was arrested at "Sava" in Marathokampos and executed. The gendarmes carried his severed head around the surrounding villages. But this rite of promotion was turned into a rite of heroization by the people of Samos.

Roukunas wrote 3 songs for this story.

The thieves "They burned the mother of the Yagades", the "Yagades", and the chamiko "in the outskirts of Samos".

DIMITRIS MYSTAKIDIS - The rebetika of the guitar 2.0

"Strong emotions come suddenly.

Suddenly we fall in love, suddenly we lose loved ones, suddenly "keeping my distance" means caring. But life always moves forward, in a new version, with a different context and we continue to dream and hope. In the special circumstances we live in, the joy of being together again gives us strength and optimism.

In Technopolis on July 21st we will all be except one, but he will always be with us. Ifigenia, Dimitris, Sakis, the other Dimitris, Kostis and I will play and sing our favorite rebetika. And we hope to sing them with you. Let's become one voice, so that as the poet said:

Shout it so loud

where no dream in the world sleeps again

no hope for him to die anymore".
