The Colosseum and the Legend of the Devil

A beautiful night image of the Colosseum. Does the name really derive from the Devil?

Why the Colosseum is it called that?

Originally what became the most famous monument in the world was simply the Flavian Amphitheater, name that derives from Vespasiano and Tito, the emperors of the Flavian dynasty who had wanted it to be built, while the name of "Colosseum" was coined only a long time later, precisely in the Middle Ages.

The derivation of the name seems to be clear and due to the fact that the building stood near a gigantic statue of Nero .

However, there are also other theories in this regard, including one according to which the Colosseum was in ancient times a pagan temple dedicated to the Devil , a peculiarity that would later determine its name.

According to the proponents of this suggestive hypothesis, at the end of each ceremony of adoration of the Devil that regularly took place within its walls, the priest would have asked each of the followers “Colis Eum?” that is “Lo Do you love? ” (the Devil) and from Coliseum he would then move on to the Colosseum.
