End of the conflict (243-241)

In -243, the Romans, having reconstituted their fleet, were ready to resume the fight at sea. After several minor engagements in -242, their new fleet won, in -241, a decisive victory off the Aegadian Islands over the Carthaginians who ends the conflict.

The Carthaginians accept the terms of the treaty presented by the Romans, at the end of which they evacuate Sicily, return all the prisoners of war and undertake to pay in 10 years a war indemnity of 3200 talents of gold

Thus ends a long and deadly war. The human losses were considerable[10]. Sicily is completely devastated, and becomes the Roman province of Sicily, with the exception of Syracuse which remains independent and allied with Rome. Paradoxically, Rome was now the dominant sea power in the western Mediterranean for over a thousand years. In addition, in Carthage itself, a revolt called the Mercenary War broke out.
