Mahra Sultanate | historical state, Yemen

Mahra Sultanate , full Mahra Sultanate of Qishn and Socotra , former semi-independent state on the South Arabian Peninsula , including the island Sokotra in Indian Ocean , in today's East Yemen . The mainland part of the sultanate on the coast of the Arabian Sea had its capital at Qishn, although the most recent sultans preferred to reside at Tamrida (modern day Hadīboh) in Socotra. The Sultan signed treaties in 1886 and 1888 accepting British protection for his country. The last sultan was deposed in 1967 when the British left the region. Local produce includes fish and incense .
