Makapansgat | anthropological and archaeological site, South Africa

Makapansgat , site of paleoanthropological excavations, one of the oldest known cave sites in South Africa, the Fossils from Australopithecus africanus .

The Area around Makapansgat is about 150 miles north of Sterkfontein , an important site where numerous hominin (human ancestry) fossils have been found. It consists of dolomite- Cliffs pierced by multiple caves. Searches Limeworks Cave from 1947 to 1962 by a team led by a paleoanthropologist Raymond Dart revealed the remains of about 40 people from Australopithecus africanus , a type of graceful (slender) hominin from 2.5 to 3 million years ago or more. The herd's den nearby revealed the right side of an early Homo sapiens Child's jaw from 100,000 to 200,000 years ago.
