Cultural archaeology focuses on the material remains of human culture, such as artifacts, architecture, and ecofacts. Cultural archaeologists are interested in understanding how past societies lived, how they interacted with their environment, and how their cultures changed over time.

Natural archaeology focuses on the natural environment in which past humans lived, such as climate, geology, and vegetation. Natural archaeologists are interested in understanding how the natural environment influenced past human behavior, and how past humans in turn impacted the environment.
