Why were writing and art important to neolithic society?

While writing did exist by the end of the Neolithic era, neolithic people did not practice either writing or art as far as I know? The Neolithic era spans 8,000 to 11,700 BCE. While written languages such as Sumerian cuneiform appeared around 3000 BCE and pictographic languages were known around 10,500 BCE, they appeared only after the beginning of the Bronze Age. Similarly, although there is extensive rock art dating back up to around 40,000 BCE and pottery that could be regarded as an art form appeared by around 13,000 BCE, these fall significantly before the Neolithic in the paleolithic, mesolithic, and epipaleolithic periods before settled village life and agriculture in the Neolithic proper. There may of course be regional nuances that I am unfamiliar with.
