How is a long tom used by miners?

A long tom is a simple sluice box used by miners to separate valuable minerals from sediment and gravel. It consists of a long, inclined trough with wooden riffles (cleats) attached to the bottom to trap heavy minerals. Water flows through the trough, carrying the sediment over the riffles while allowing the heavier minerals to settle in the crevices. The trapped minerals can be further refined and processed to extract gold or other metals.
