Archaeological discoveries

What was the corps of discovery set out to do?

The Corps of Discovery was set out to:

- Explore the newly acquired Louisiana Territory, which had been purchased from France in 1803.

- Find a water route to the Pacific Ocean, which was thought to exist somewhere in the Northwest.

- Establish trade with the Native American tribes along the way.

- Document the plants, animals, and resources of the region.

- Claim the Oregon Country for the United States, which was then in dispute with Great Britain.
