How did the stone age get its name?

The Stone Age gets its name from the materials used to make tools by early humans during this period. The Paleolithic era, which covers the early part of the Stone Age, is characterized by the use of crudely fashioned stone tools, while the Neolithic era, which marks the later part of the Stone Age, saw the development of more advanced stone tools and techniques, including agriculture and pottery. The Stone Age ended when humans began to use metals such as bronze and iron.
