Estevanico Dorantes was of Berber origin and enslaved by the Spanish. In 1527 he was part of a Spanish expedition led by Pánfilo de Narváez that set out from Spain to explore the Gulf Coast of North America. The expedition was disastrous and Dorantes was one of the few survivors. He spent the next eight years wandering through the interior of North America before finally reaching Mexico City in 1536.
