Is black onyx stone the same as agate stone?

Black onyx and agate are both varieties of chalcedony, a type of microcrystalline quartz. Agate is characterized by its distinct banding pattern, while black onyx is a solid, opaque gemstone that is typically black in color.

Onyx is a banded variety of chalcedony with alternating layers of white and black (or another darker) colors. Its coloration is due to trace amounts of manganese and/or iron. Black onyx refers to onyx that is predominantly or entirely black due to relatively higher concentrations of impurities.
