Who were the French explorers that discovered area which is Missouri?

The French were not the first explorers of Missouri. The Spanish conquistador Hernando de Soto led the first European expedition to explore what would become Missouri in the 16th century. French explorers also came to the region, including Jacques Marquette and Louis Jolliet, who famously traversed the Mississippi River and passed through part of what is now Missouri in 1673. However, it was not until the 18th century, with the arrival of more permanent French settlements, that France laid claim to the region.
