He worked as a machinist and engineer, and in 1870, he built his first steam-powered automobile. The car could reach speeds of up to 12 miles per hour. Fleming continued to develop and improve his automobile, and in 1877, he built a new car that was powered by a gasoline engine. This was the first successful gasoline-powered automobile in the United States.
