Most farms in the middle colonies operated using indentured servants. Indentured servants were people who agreed to work for a set period of time in exchange for their passage to America. They were often young people from Europe who could not afford to pay for their own passage. Indentured servants worked long hours and were often treated poorly, but they were eventually given their freedom and a small amount of land.
