What problem or challenge was Alexander the Great trying to solve?

To conquer and unite the known world under his rule.

Alexander's father, Philip II of Macedon, had already begun the process of conquering Greece and expanding Macedon's influence in the Balkans and Asia Minor. Alexander continued his father's work, and by the time he was 33 years old, he had conquered the Persian Empire, Egypt, and parts of India. Alexander was driven by a desire to create a world empire that would be united by Greek culture and language. He also wanted to spread Greek civilization to the rest of the world.
