There is no historical evidence that Moctezuma paid great reverence to Hernán Cortés. In fact, Moctezuma was initially intimidated and suspicious of Cortés and his men when they first arrived in Mexico in 1519. Cortés was able to gain Moctezuma's trust and alliance through a combination of cunning diplomacy, military force, and the use of indigenous allies.
