How did the butcher of Somme get his nickname?

The "Butcher of the Somme" was Erich Ludendorff, Germany's First Quartermaster-General. The name alludes to the disastrous tactics he devised that resulted in over a million total casualties between the Allies and Central Powers. The Allied troops suffered the overwhelming majority of this total with over 600,000 wounded or killed over only five month on the Somme River.
