The origins of Mardi Gras can be traced back to ancient pagan celebrations, but the holiday as we know it today was brought to America by French colonists in the 18th century. In 1720, French-Canadian explorer Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne, sieur de Bienville, established the city of New Orleans.
The earliest celebrations were small social gatherings and masked balls among white New Orleans residents until African American influences grew during the late 19th century. The festivities eventually began spreading from private society balls to the streets after the Civil War.
