Francis II (1544 – 1560)

Francis II is the eldest son of Henry II and Catherine de Medici. At the age of 14, he married Marie Stuart (famous Queen of Scotland, and niece of the Guises). He was proclaimed king on the tragic death of his father in 1559. Being a minor, he chose to entrust power to the Guises. His reign marks the beginning of the politico-religious antagonism between the Catholic clan of the Guise and the reformed nobles:Navarre, Condé, Coligny. The conspiracy of Amboise, a failed coup d'etat by the Protestant gentlemen, is the perfect illustration of this. François II dies after a few months of reign following an otitis which degenerates into abscess. He was then only 16 years old.
