John Calvin(1509 – 1564)

Jean Calvin was born in Picardy, very quickly he embraced the Reformation and encouraged its expansion. He takes refuge in Switzerland when the Protestants are persecuted following the “Affaire des Placards”. He is among Martin Luther, Ulrich Zwingli and Martin Bucer, one of the main architects of the Protestant Reformation. His doctrine, which presents some differences with that of Luther, is exposed in his main work The Institution of the Christian Religion . Calvinism is very popular in France. His writings written in French promote the development of literature on the same level as humanist authors like Montaigne or Rabelais.
