Starting from the 1700s, some typical objects of women's everyday life were transformed into unsuspected instruments of seduction with whom to respond, affirmatively or negatively, showing interest or annoyance, to the courtship of men, all without those present noticing anything.
So it was, for example, that with the fan, at the time an inevitable accessory of the look of the ladies, a sort of coded language was created through which to secretly interact with the suitor:a sign rather than another, move it in one direction or the other, let it slide to the ground or pick it up, apparently simple and normal actions, acquired a precise meaning, giving life to a discreet love language in the name of play and charm.
Particularly important in this regard were the fan sticks :opening three meant “I love you “, While counting them with your fingers meant “ let's talk about it later ”.
Besides, how did a man know when a woman was giving him the next date?
It was enough for him to count how many sticks of his fan remained open, the number of which corresponded to the days of waiting.
