History of Pala Dynasty

Gopal (750-770 AD)

Gopal is considered the founder of Palvansh. He was a capable and efficient ruler. He spread the authority of the Pala dynasty in the region of Bihar. Gopal ruled from 750 to 770 AD i.e. for 20 years. He got a monastery and university built in Udantpuri i.e. present Bihar Sharif.

Dharampala (770-810 AD)

After Gopal, his son Dharmapala ascended the throne in 770 AD. He was the first ruler of the Pala dynasty to be involved in a three - party struggle for Kanauj . Dharmapala was a Buddhist. He built many monasteries and Buddhist viharas.

Dharampal got Mahavihara and University constructed at Vikramshila located in Bhagalpur district and donated 200 villages for the maintenance of Nalanda University. Pratihara king Nagabhatta II and Rashtrakuta king Dhurva defeated Dharmapala.

Dev Pal (810- 850 AD)

After Dharmapala, his son Dev Pal sat on the throne. He made Munger his capital. Dev Pal also participated in the struggle of Kannauj. Dev Pal became famous as a patron in Buddhism. On the request of the ruler of Java, Balaputradev, Devpal gave 5 villages in grant for the maintenance of a vihara in Nalada. He ruled for 40 years. After the death of Devpal, the decline of the Pala dynasty started.

From Vigraha Pal to Mahipala (850- 1038 AD)

Dev Pal was followed by Vigrahapala (850-854 AD), Narayan Pal (854-915 AD), Governor (915-940 AD), Gopal II (960 AD) and Vigraha Pal II (960-988 AD). Become a ruler After that, during the time of Mahipala I (988 AD to 1038 AD), the Pala dynasty emerged again.

Mahipala I is considered to be the second founder of the Pala dynasty. Rampal (1097-1098 AD) was the last ruler of this year.
