History of Tana Bhagat Movement

Tana Bhagat movement was started on 21st April, 1914 AD from Nawa Toli village of Vishnupur block of Gumla district, as a result of this movement a new religious movement was started by Oraon, which has been called Kurukh religion or religion of Kurukh. Jattra Bhagat was the main leader of this movement. The Tana Bhagat movement is the most important and decisive example of the assimilation of the tribes of Bihar into the stream of the national movement.

Basically this movement was also against the atrocities of the zamindars, administration and dikus (outsiders). But instead of violent struggle, the path of constitutional struggle was adopted. These agitators were influenced by the Congress program and the principles of Gandhiji. He propagated Khadi and opposed Christian missionaries.

Their main demands were the right to self-government, boycott of rent and equality among human beings. By 1919 AD, this movement had spread on a large scale. During the non-cooperation movement, the Tana Bhagat agitators also participated in this and supported the program - temple renunciation, picketing at liquor shops etc.

The agitators were also very active in the Civil Disobedience Movement and the Quit India Movement. He considered Dr. Rajendra Prasad and Krishna Ballabh Sahay as his guides. Shibu, Maya, Deviya etc. were the main leaders of this movement.
