Governor General of Bengal

Today in this article we are giving you the list of Governor General of Bengal who was in the post of Governor General of Bengal from 1172 AD to 1828 AD.

Governor General of Bengal

Warren Hastings (1772 AD – 1785 AD)

He was the first governor of Bengal.

His tenure was from 20 October 1772 to 1 February 1785.

Government Treasury transferred from Murshidabad to Calcutta. Introduced civil criminal courts.

Established the South Asiatic Society of Bengal in 1784.

During this, the Rudela War, the First Maratha War and the Second Anglo-Mysore War took place.

It was during this time that the first madrasa was established in Calcutta for the development of Muslim education in 1781 AD.

In 1775 AD, Nand Kumar was hanged and in 1778 AD he misbehaved with Raja Chait Singh of Banaras.

Jonathan Duncan established Sanskrit College in Banaras in 1791 AD.

Lord Earl Cornwallis (1786 AD – 1793 AD)

His tenure was from 12 September 1786 to 28 October 1793.

During this time, the Third Mysore War and the Treaty of Sri Rangapatnam was held in 1792 AD. Cornwallis Code was created.

Cornwallis also worked for police reforms and implemented permanent settlement in Bengal in 1793 AD, under which the zamindars now had to give 10/11 part of the land revenue to the company and 1/11 part was to be kept with them etc.

Sir John Shore (1793 AD – 1798 AD)

His tenure was from 28 October 1793 to March 1798.

Adopted the policy of laissez faire, intervened only in the case of Awadh's successor and in 1795 AD there was a war between the Nizams and the Marathas.

Lord Belenzali (1789 AD – 1805 AD)

Under the leadership of Belizeli, the British did the Fourth Mysore War (1799 AD), in which Tipu Sultan was killed.

Initiated the Subsidiary Treaty.

George Barlow (1805 AD – 1807 AD)

During his time Vellore rebellion (1806 AD) took place in which many British soldiers were killed.

Lord Minto-1 (1807 AD – 1813 AD)

His tenure was from 31 July 1807 to 4 October 1813.

The Charter Act of 1813 was passed and Charles Metcalf was sent by Minto to Ranjit Singh's court, where the Treaty of Amritsar was signed in 1809.

Lord Hastings (1813 AD – 1823 AD)

His tenure was from 1 August 1823 to 13 March 1828.

Nepal War in 1814-16 AD and Treaty of Sungauli in 1816 AD.

Last Maratha War in 1818 AD etc.

Lord Amherst (1823 AD – 1828 AD)

During this time the First Anglo-Burma War (1824-26 AD) was fought.

Military rebellion of Barrackpore of 1824 AD also took place.

The siege of Bharatpur also took place during this period.
