Historical Recreation:ARTE ET MARTE

June 3, 4 and 5, 2016, La Virgen del Camino will travel back two thousand years to host the event Arte et Marte . Organized by the Legio IV Macedónica Cultural and Historical Recreation Association, with the collaboration of the Valverde de la Virgen City Council and the Exma. Diputación de León, the event aims to bring together more than 200 re-enactors historical belonging to some of the best groups in Spain.

The event will revolve around three interconnected spaces. On the one hand, a legionary camp that will welcome Roman soldiers from different eras, from the times of the Roman Monarchy to the end of the Empire. In this space, the legionnaires will install their tents and their siege weapons, carrying out different activities and explanations for the attending public. Aspects such as the military formations, the use of Roman artillery, the minting of coins or the cuisine of the time, are just some of the surprises that the camp will host, defended by seasoned soldiers.

A second space, the cannabae , will welcome the Roman civilian population and the feared pre-Roman enemies, the Cantabrians, Asturians and Celtiberians who will show their customs, rituals and war tactics. But it will also be a space for the market, made up of stores linked to historical recreation and archaeological reproduction, a place to buy everything from a sword to a jewel or ceramic.

Finally, the amphitheater could not be missing, where the citizens will have fun watching the training sessions and the great Ludus in which the gladiators will fight. In addition, a representation of the Leonese National Team, which has recently participated in the European Celtic Wrestling Championship, will demonstrate the hand-to-hand fighting techniques used since ancient times.

The program will also include two conferences given by archaeologists of renowned prestige in the northwest of the peninsula, who will present the latest advances in archaeological research on the Iron Age of the NW, and from the weaponry and equipment of the Roman legionnaires.

On the other hand, as godfather of this first edition, the writer Santiago Posteguillo will be present, recognized as one of the best writers of the historical novel with a Roman setting and whose latest novel, The Lost Legion , closes the famous trilogy on Trajan.

Legio IV Macedonica, Athenea Prómakhos , Evocati Apri Scipioni , Recreators of Galicia, Roman Hispania , A.C. Emerita Antiqua , A.C. Experimental Antiqua Clio , Caetra lucensium , Brothers in Arms, Cohors Prima Gallica , Cohors Prima Celtiberorum, Luporum Celtiberiae Leuconi, Ludus Gladiatorium Vulcanum and Tarraco Ludus , are the associations that will participate in this first edition.

Arte et Marte thus aims to unite four elements:historical re-enactors, suppliers and artisans, the general public and researchers, creating a meeting and debate forum that allows Re-enactmentism to be promoted Historical in Spain and create an event that becomes a milestone in peninsular recreation and that can continue to grow in future editions.
