Language of eye flirtation in the 19th century

On too many occasions, for the taste of kin seekers , women of marriageable age were accompanied by their mothers, servants or other members of their family who prevented free communication between couples. So, alternative forms of communication were invented:fans, false moles... today we will deal with the language of flirting with the eyes .

The keys to that language were published in 1891 by the Taranaki Herald newspaper. from New Plymouth (New Zealand) under the title Eye Flirtation :

Winking the right eye – I love you
Winking the left eye – I hate you.
Winking both eyes – Yes
Winking both eyes at the same time -They are watching us.
Winking the right eye twice – I'm engaged.
Wink left eye twice -I'm married.
Lower eyelids- Can I kiss you?
Raise eyebrows – Kiss me.
Close left eye Slowly – Taste and love me.
Close the right eye slowly – You are beautiful.
Place the right index finger on the right eye – Do you love me?
Place the right index finger on the left eye – You are handsome
Place your right little finger over your right eye – no shame!
