Annual and the Spanish protectorate of Morocco

Yesterday, the Council of Ministers awarded an important collective military decoration to the 14th Alcántara Cavalry Regiment. This regiment covered the withdrawal of the rest of the Spanish troops in the Battle of Annual (the Annual disaster), having a brave and outstanding behavior, exceptional in the debacle of the battle. This confrontation is part of the Rif War conflict, a very unpopular contest due to the high number of Spanish victims it caused and because it highlighted the inequalities that allowed the rich to avoid military service in Africa. The defeat caused, along with other causes, a serious political crisis that eroded the monarchy of Alfonso XIII and paved the way for the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera
This battle was part of a colonial war that took place in the twenties that affected to the then Spanish Protectorate of Morocco, a political entity that survived between 1912 and 1956.
