The 2nd Marine Infantry Regiment

* 1622:creation by Cardinal Richelieu of the companies of the sea.
* 1822:ordinance of the King prescribing the formation of two Marine infantry regiments.
* The ordinance of King Louis-Philippe I of May 14, 1831 creates two infantry regiments assigned to the ordinary service of the garrisons of the French colonies (direct and uninterrupted filiation of the 2nd RIMa from this date and up to the present day ).
* March 1, 1890:created by splitting the 6th marine infantry regiment
* 1900:takes the name of 2nd colonial infantry regiment , he was regrouped in Brest
* on December 1, 1958, the 2° R.I.C. becomes the 2nd RlMa again.

History of the garrisons, fights and battle of the 2nd RIMa
1815 to 1848

* 1823:expedition to Spain]] (); campaign in Madagascar and South America. (1829).

Second Empire

* August 31, 1854:The 2nd RIMa, stationed in Rochefort, moved to Brest.
* Crimean campaign
* Campaign in China and Indochina.
* Expedition to Mexico:siege of Puebla
* Pacification in the Far East
* 1869:it is divided between Brest, the Cochinchina and Guadeloupe
* For the first time, the 2nd Marine fought on homeland soil. On August 31 and September 1, 1870, engaged in the "Blue Division", the 2nd RIMa sacrificed itself at Bazeilles in a heroic fight against the Prussians, until the "last cartridge".

1870 to 1914

* Operation in Senegal and Niger (1882)
* Tonkin Campaign (1882-1883)
* Expedition to Formosa and occupation of the Pescadores Islands (1884).
* At Tuyen-Quan:600 men of the regiment resist for 6 months the assaults of 15,000 Chinese
* Pacification of Madagascar (1885).
* First Dahomey campaign (1889).
* Fights against the Boxers in China (1900).
* Colonial troops become an army by trade, by the law of July 5, 1900.
* Campaign of Morocco (1910).

First World War
* 1914:still stationed in Brest, he was part of the 1st colonial brigade; 3rd Colonial Infantry Division

Reconstituted more than ten times, having during 52 months of daily struggles nearly 20,000 men killed, wounded or missing, the 2nd R.I.C. took part in all the major battles of the conflict. The regiment receives 4 citations to the order of the Army as well as the fourragère in the colors of the Military Medal.

World War II

* Engaged in Amiens, the regiment was dissolved in November 1940.
* The 2° Brigade of Free France takes up the traditions of the 2° RIC, and participates in the campaigns of ERITREA « KUB-KUB 1941”, from LIBYA “EL ALAMEIN 1942”, from TUNISIA “TAKROUNA 1943”, from ITALY “PONTE CORVO 1944” then from FRANCE “TOULON 1944 and COLMAR1945”
* By order of General de Gaulle, May 25, 1945, the 2nd D.F.L. takes up the traditions of the 2nd Marine Infantry Regiment.
* General de Gaulle will form the 2nd R.I.C. “Compagnon de la Liberation” and awarded him the Cross of the Liberation, his fodder received the olive in the colors of the Croix de Guerre 39-45 (07.08.1945)

From 1945 to the present day

* Indochina War where the 1st marching battalion is awarded the TOE War Cross with palm.
* Algeria:the 2° R.I.C. three battalions was sent in full to Algeria, sectors of Khensela, El Kantara and Batna (1954-1959), sectors of Orléan-Ville, Vallée de la Soumman (1959-1962).
* It was established in Sarthe in 1963:part at Le Mans, part at Auvours.
* Since its professionalization in 1978, the 2nd RIMa has participated in numerous operations which have taken place in all the continents. The 2nd Navy has distinguished itself in particular in CHAD, MAURITANIA, LEBANON, EX-YUGOSLAVIA, ALBANIA, CËNTRAFRIQUE, IVORY COAST, GUYANA, NEW CALEDONIA, SENEGAL, KOSOVO, BOSNIA, in CAMEROON, and in MACEDONIA.

During the Gulf War, the regiment was cited in the order of the brigade on May 10, 1991, this citation includes the TOE War Cross with bronze star. These operations have always been carried out with success and vigor without having avoided injury or death to some porpoises.

* 2003 and 2004:Côte d'Ivoire:the regiment is deployed in the south-west of the Republic of Côte d'Ivoire where it ensures the return of refugees and repels the armed gangs that terrorize the region. After 2 months stability is back! The regiment was then sent to the center of the country. Its mission:to ensure the neutrality of the zone of confidence, which separates the rebels from the loyalist forces.

* Bosnia-Herzegovina:the 2nd RIMa is the last French regiment to arm and command the Franco-Spanish battalion of the SALAMANDRE brigade in Mostar. Its mission is to collect the weapons still held by the populations and facilitate the reorganization of the French forces in the area.
