Gods of Ancient China

I offer you a brief description of some of the gods that the ancient Chinese believed in. From this list you will learn the name of the goddess who made people out of clay, the names of the spirits of fire, metal and other elements, the gods of luck, prosperity, war, happiness and other important aspects that worried the minds of the inhabitants of the Middle Kingdom.

Ju-show - the god of autumn, was in charge of punishments in heaven, the spirit of metal.

Luu - manager of affairs in the heavenly palace (nine-tailed tiger with a human face).

Nuwa - a female spirit with a human body, bird legs and a snake tail. She created people from clay.

Pangu - the first man who broke the egg from which heaven and earth were formed. After his death, the moon and the sun were formed from his eyes, rivers from his blood, stars in the sky from his hair.

Fushi - Ruler of the East. The East was identified with spring.

Huang Di ("Yellow Lord") - Yan-di's brother, was not only the supreme ruler, but also the ruler of the Center.

Zhuanxu - the god-ruler of the North (winter), had a human face, a pig's snout, a scaly body, fused legs, boar's hooves. The spirit of water helped him in the management.

Zhurong - Chinese spirit of fire, sat on a chariot of clouds, harnessed by two dragons.

Shaohao - the ruler of the West, considered the country of birds and the seat of autumn. All ministers and subjects of Shaohao were birds.

Yan Di (Shen-nong, "red sovereign") - the god of the sun, healer, ruler of the South. He was very merciful to people, taught them to sow cereals and gave them light and warmth. They represented a god with a human body and a bull's head.

Bai Hu ("white tiger") - one of the spirits, the patron of the West.

Bi gan - civil god of wealth (in Chinese mythology, the gods were often divided into civilian and military).

Bixia Yuanjun (Taishan Niannyan, "Lady of the Azure Clouds") - the patroness of children and foxes, the daughter of the ruler of the sacred mountain Taishan. She was accompanied by six patron goddesses of various periods of childhood.

Budai Heshan (Pu tai, "monk with a bag") - the deity of joy, prosperity, contentment.

Bei dou - the gods of rain, the rulers of life and death of people.

Bian qiao - patron saint of healers. He was depicted with a bird's beak and bat wings.

Wang Ming Guan - one of the heavenly commanders, the guardian of the doors of temples. He was represented as a large, red-faced, three-eyed man with a whip in his hand.

Wei Gu — patron god of medicine.

Weito - heavenly warrior, guardian of monasteries, patron of the South, guardian of the law and leader of the spirits guarding the law.

Wei shang ceyun - one of the patron gods of literature, poets, had two assistants - Kui-sin and Zhu-i.

Wengshen - spirits of plagues (epidemics):spring pestilence - Zhang Yuan-bo, summer - Xiang Yuan-da, autumn - Zhao Gunn-ming, winter - Zhong Shigui, center - Shi Wen-e.

Go Shan - the god of spring and the spirit of the tree.

Guo Zi Yi — one of the gods of happiness.

Guandi - god of war and wealth; he was depicted with a dark red face.

Kwan Yin - the goddess-savior, the patroness of the female half of the house, the giver of children. She was represented as a multi-armed woman with a rope or a jug with a willow branch.

Gui — evil spirits of the dead.

Guishu - “mother of demons”, patroness of life and death. A female deity with a tiger head, dragon legs, boa constrictor eyes.

Gunngunn - the deity of water, an evil spirit with a snake body, a human face and red hair.

Dizang-wann - the supreme lord of hell, saving souls from the underground court. The ruler of the underworld had ten assistant judges. He was depicted as a man with an iron staff in one hand and a luminous pearl in the other.

Di-Zeng - the ancient deity personifying chaos. Depicted as a bird with six legs and four wings.

Di Jun - the supreme ruler, the first ancestor (later he was supplanted by the cult of Huangdi).

Dou Shu - a deity in charge of life and death, a deity of light and a protector from wars. In the drawings, he was depicted as a man with four faces, eight arms and three eyes.

Du Wang Gun - the lord of the East, the patron of the immortals - a three-meter man with a bird's face and a tiger's tail.

Du Kang - the patron god of wine merchants and the inventor of wine.

Dian Shu - Goddess of Lightning. She was depicted as a woman in colorful dresses with two mirrors in her hands.
