Singhasari , an in east Java resident kingdom in first half of 13th century after the decline of the kingdom Kadiri was born . Singhasari's first king, Ken Angrok (or Ken Arok) defeated the king of Kadiri, Kertajaya, in 1222. The Last King of Singhasari, Kertanagara (r. 1268–92) temporarily unified East Java. Towards the end of Kertanagara's reign, Kublai Khan , the great khan of Mongolians and Emperor of China , an envoy to Singhasari who demanded a tribute, but Kertanagara refused, even insulting Kublai's ambassador. Soon after, the ruler of Kadiri, Jayakatwang, rebelled against Singhasari and killed Kertanagara, ending the period of Singhasari rule. The temples built during the reign of Singhasari are considered great examples of Hindu-Javanese art.
