Franconia | historic duchy, Germany

Franconia , German- Franconia , one of the five major stems, or Root Duchies - the other four are Sachsen, Lotharingia (Lorraine), Swabia and Bavaria - des early medieval Germany . Today is divided into between Rheinfranken, is now into the countries (states) from Rhineland-Palatinate , Baden-Württemberg and Hesse , and east Franconia, now in the States Baden-Württemberg and Bayern .

The Church has always been strong in the region and its dioceses have included the Archdiocese Mainz (in Rheinfranken) and Bamberg and Würzburg (Eastern Franconia). After the mid-13th century, the Franks were fragmenting into secular and ecclesiastical Principalities accelerated. 1340 these areas organized the Landfriedensbund , which is used as the basis for the Early 16th Century Furnished Franconian circle (county or prefecture) served.

In Napoleons Restructuring of Germany, the Franconian region was divided between the kingdoms of Bavaria and Württemberg and the grand duchy of Baden. King Ludwig I. von Bayern revived the use of the name in 1837 by creating the provinces of Upper, Middle and Lower Franconia, which still today the north-west corner of today's country Form Bavaria.
