Belgica | old province, Europe

Belgica , full Gallia Belgica , one of three Gaulish provinces organized by Julius Caesar; It became one of the four provinces Gauls under the Roman Empire. As from Augustus (27 v. ), Belgica, extended from the Its after east to the Rhine and included the Netherlands in the north and the Helvetic area (western Switzerland) in the south. The capital was Durocortorum Remorum (today Rheims , France). Under the Roman Emperor Domitian ( ad 81–96), large parts of Belgica along the Lower and Upper Rhine were divided into the separate provinces of Germania Inferior and Germania Inferior, respectively. converted to Germania Superior. Under Diocletian ( approx. 300 n . Chr .), the rest was done in Belgica Prima (capital, Augusta Treverorum [today Trier, German]) and Belgica Secunda (capital, Durocortorum Remorum). In the 5th century, Belgica was incorporated into the kingdoms of the Salic and Frankonian shores.
