Rouergue , old province of south-central France France , too much of the modern equivalent Departments Aveyron and Tarn-et-Garonne. It was to the north by the Auvergne, to the south and south-west by the Languedoc , to the east of Gévaudan and the Cevennes and west of Quercy limited . It derived its name from the Rutheni tribe of Gaul. Administratively, it initially formed a dependent on the Languedoc (capital Villefranche) Sénéchaussée , later attached to the military governments of Guyenne and Gascony. It disappeared as a separate entity, as in the French Revolution Departments (1790).
