Rome, Via Alessandrina, a bust emerges from the excavations

19 JULY 2019

A bust of a statue of a warrior was found Dace in white marble by the archaeologists of the Superintendence Capitolina to Goods cultural engaged in the archaeological excavation of via Alexandrina .
The bust probably belongs to one of the approximately 60-70 statues of Dacian warriors that decorated the attic of the Forum of Trajan , dating back to the beginning of the second century AD The torso is about 1.5 meters high and is in good condition. The material with which these statues were made is marble and in particular the pavonazzetto marble , the porphyry and white marble , as in the case of the one found today.

The archaeologists of the Superintendence Capitolina explain that the statue was found within a level of neglect, following a collapse to be dated to the time of medieval demolitions, presumably in the second half of the 9th century AD. A different context of discovery, therefore, from that of the head of a divinity found on 24 May , which had instead been intentionally reused in a late medieval wall as a building material .

Already in 1998 and in the course of 2000, similar findings had occurred during the excavations of the square of the Forum of Trajan and the statues of Dacians then discovered are now exhibited at the Trajan's Markets - Museum of the Imperial Forums.

The excavation is supervised by the Capitoline Superintendency for Cultural Heritage on concession of the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities - Archaeological Park of the Colosseum and with the support of PArCo archaeologists.
