Wat Bo Thip

General condition

The ancient site of Wat Bo Thip is behind Wat Bo Thip. Along the 700-year-old Chiang Mai road, it is now a Buddhist temple, Wat Rat, under the Maha Nikaya. There are monks who live in the Buddhist Lent. The surrounding area is gardens and residential houses.

Wat Bo Thip is a large archaeological site. Located on the outskirts of Wiang Kum Kam in the southeast. It is located 2.3 kilometers east of the Ping River on the east side of Chiang Mai-Lamphun Road.

Wat Bo Thip It is an archaeological site that does not appear in historical documents. Formerly known as Wat Pa Kha But after the villagers found that there was a sacred pond in the temple area. therefore called this ancient site "Wat Bo Thip"

The Fine Arts Department conducted a preliminary excavation for the first time in 1993, and later landscape improvements were carried out. Including the excavation and restoration of the ancient site of Wat Bo Thip in the year 2002 (Department of Fine Arts 2005 :84) found information on ancient sites and antiquities as follows:

Architectural features

1. The viharn is in a rectangular plan. facing east Lifting the front gauge 2 parts, back 1 part, looks like a small board. Stacked square in 2 layers, receiving the base of the cornice and the floor of the board. There is a staircase leading up only in front. There was no trace of the brick paving on the floor of the temple.

2. L-shaped building with stairs leading up both the front and the back. Currently, only the base part is visible. which consists of a chopping board base 1 layer, receiving 2 layers of inverted lotus tiers, similar to the Viharn of Wat That Noi.

3. Chedi Rai is located to the south of the Viharn. The layout is square.

Artifacts found

Antiques found include Haripunchai pottery. Pottery from the San Kamphaeng kiln source Pottery from the Wiang Kalong kiln source A piece of Chinese wares written in blue under the glaze. Ming dynasty (1911 - 2187 BC), also in the first excavation. Found a brick with inscriptions in Lanna scriptures. The age is set during the 21st Buddhist century.

Relevant local legend

The legend about the sacred pond inside the temple is said that when King Mengrai built Wiang Kum Kam residing in this area and there was an epidemic So 3 wells were dug to concoct medicines, the 1st for the royal family, the 2nd for the soldiers, the 3rd for the villagers.
