archaeological essence

Wat Phra Borommathat Thung Yang or what the villagers often call Wat Thung Yang or Wat Mahathat Chedi (The word Thung Yung comes from an old legend that tells that the Lord Buddha came to rest in this city) is a sacred place Around the temple there were two ditches drilled deep into the laterite layer and three walls, but in the lowlands there were some single-walled, some double-walled, and some single-layered ditches (Rev. Pinduphan 1978 :39 )

Wat Phra Borommathat Thung Yang It is now a Rat temple. Affiliated with Maha Nikaya Probably built in the Sukhothai period by Phraya Lithai around 1902 as evidenced by the stone inscription of Wat Pa Daet, the 9th pillar, sheet 1, page 435 (Buddhist Division 1982:116)

For the importance of this temple in the Sukhothai period Although there is no consensus on the opinion of Muang Thung Yang in the Sukhothai period as Mueang Bang Yang or is it Muang Rad Of Pho Khun Pha Muang or not (Chatchai Muksong 2000:26), but from the presence of Wat Phra Borommathat believed to be the place where the Buddha's relics are enshrined It is located in the middle of the ancient city with a line of moats and fortifications appearing. This reflects that Wat Phra Borommathat Thung Yang was an area that played a role in the Sukhothai period. which may be a frontier town under the royal initiative of His Majesty King Mongkut (King Rama VII 1976:204-211) because the name of the city of Thung Yang is not visible in the Sukhothai inscription. but appears in the law of kidnapping During the reign of King Ramathibodi I (King U Thong), the name was Muang Thung Yang Bang Yom (Northern Chronicles 1963 :8)

Muang Thung Yang is located in a position that controls the route that connects to the northeast. along the Nan River to Nan and Luang Prabang and to the southeast, cutting through the city of Tron down to the Kwai Noi River basin. Passing through Chattrakarn City to Nakhon Thai then continue to Vientiane Wiang Kham in the Mekong River Basin The western part can be used to connect directly to the villages in the Yom River basin, going to be the city of Si Satchanalai (Chatchai Muksong 2000 :25).

In the Ayutthaya period, although the city of Thung Yang seemed to have deteriorated in importance but it is assumed that in the reign of King Boromsom His Highness came to renovate the Viharn at Wat Phra Borommathat Thung Yang when he came to worship the stone altar in the year 1740 (Somdej Krom Phraya Damrong Rajanupap 1966 :77)

Within the temple area, there are important ancient sites such as

The main chedi is a bell-shaped chedi, about 22 x 22 meters in size, about 25 meters in height, surrounded by a glass wall. The pagoda consists of a chopping board base stacked in 3 tiers, the lowest base being made of laterite. There is a chedi at the corner at the base. The next one is made of bricks and has some laterite mixed with it. in the middle of the four elements house enshrined a standing Buddha image in the arch It is assumed that it will be made later. The upper part is a bell-shaped chedi, and the lower part is somewhat narrow, decorated with a lotus mouth. Continuing to be a square throne and why?

From the chopping board base that is stacked 3 layers and the shape that appears Somdej Krom Phraya Damrong Rajanupap believed that it was originally a chedi in the shape of a bush. (Somdej Krom Phraya Damrong Rajanupap 1966:77), which is well accepted with the evidence of the year the temple was built that corresponds to Phraya Lithai. which is popular to build a chedi in the shape of a bush There is also evidence of the restoration of the chedi at Wat Phra Borommathat Thung Yang in the year 1901 in the royal writing of the distance letter to Phitsanulok of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. The details are as follows:

“There is a relic behind the temple. The height is almost 20 wa. It is a form of a new Burmese pagoda on Long Chong. Phra Siva Songkhram says Phra That Doem Lek Here he added a new addition two months ago. Burmese artisans are hired to do the work in Burma. along with the glass wall door The new shape is good.” (King Boromwongse, Prince Krom Phraya Rissaranuwattiwong 1963 :20)

Viharn, located on the east side of the main chedi, is a viharn of 5 rooms made of laterite and brick. Surrounded by a glass wall, approximately 10.5x25 meters in size, approximately 14 meters high, with a 3-tiered tiled roof decorated with bouquets of flowers, rooster leaves, swan tails, carved wooden gables, painted animal figures. There are porches on both the front and back. Inside is enshrined the principal Buddha image, lacquered stucco and gilded in the attitude of subduing Mara, lap width 2 wa 10 inches, height 3 wa 10 inches. The villagers gave their names to "Luang Por To", some "Luang Por Patan Tao", and some "Luang Por Lak Muang". There is a round pillar in front of the Buddha image. The head of the pillar is a group of lotus-bearing ceilings in red painted wood with Thai patterns. And on the inner wall, at the front wall, there is a mural depicting the history of the Buddha in the time of demons at the level above the door. At the lower wall, it was written about the Sangthong, but it was greatly erased. The upper wall attached to the roof depicts Thep Chumhum. These paintings are presumed to have been written during the reign of King Rama V (Huan Phinthuphan 1978 :44).

In the archives the distance to Phitsanulok Mention the restoration of the reign of King Nang Klao. and the Buddha image inside the Viharn in one part saying:

“ ....there is a large viharn... you can see that Phra Nang Klao ordered Phraya downstream Phraya Nakhon Sawan, Phraya Uttaradit, came to perform the renovation. What year will it be and I haven't seen the new floor repaired yet? It looks like yesterday, the day before yesterday. Phra Uttaradit that Luang, formerly known as In as a people of heaven to restore The amulet in the viharn has a new, unattractive Buddha image, and is stationed with a very small cast amulet. There are some good, there are some, there are broken, there are good. They choose one standing Buddha image because he is good. There is a good one. High. Approximately 3 cubits, is an amulet Made of brass, the sheet is cut, stacked very neatly. Gold plated lamps are beautiful. porch behind the temple There is an old image of Phra Sri Arya as well. but the Buddha is clean no wonder Good at the base breaking the brass, cutting plates stacked. It's a beautiful bird....." (King Boromwongse, Prince Krom Phraya Rissaranuwattiwong 1963 :20)

Ubosot made of bricks and mortar, located within the same glass wall as the viharn, measures approximately 7.6x19 meters and about 13 meters high. The roof is tiled in three tiers, decorated with sky bouquets, rooster leaves, swan tails, and glass stucco decorations. Inside enshrines a stucco president Buddha image. appeared in the archives of the distance to Phitsanulok Thesis in Somdej Chaofa Krom Phrayarisaranuwattiwong Mention the ubosot as follows:

“.....on the left side of the main temple There is a church, but it's not that big. Old but renovated bricks and ornaments like a temple as well The presiding monk in the church is a very old monk. Craftsmanship is nothing that should be remembered….” (King Boromwongse, Prince Krom Phraya Rissaranuwattiwong 1963 :20)

In addition, within Wat Phra Borommathat Thung Yang, there are several laterite chedi remains located at the side of the viharn. Some have been repaired. In front of the viharn there is an old bell tower with a stucco topped image. And there was a stucco at the foot of the stairs, but it was greatly destroyed. There is a painting on the two-necked slats of the old Worship Hall that has been demolished. Write a picture of the Malai Sutra Preserved on the abbot's cubicle (Huan Phinthuphan 1978 :44) with a pavilion built in 1829, a multipurpose pavilion built in 1971 (Buddhist Division 1982:116)
