Here are some of Cabral's contributions to Portuguese exploration:
- Discovery of Brazil: Cabral is credited with discovering Brazil for Portugal. Although Brazil had already been visited by other European explorers, such as the Spanish explorer Vicente Yáñez Pinzón, Cabral's expedition was the first to establish a permanent Portuguese presence in the region.
- Establishment of Portuguese trading posts in India: Cabral's expedition also led to the establishment of Portuguese trading posts in India. The most important of these was Calicut, which quickly became a major center for trade between Europe and Asia.
- Expansion of Portuguese influence in the Indian Ocean: Cabral's expedition helped to expand Portuguese influence in the Indian Ocean. The Portuguese were able to use their trading posts in India as a base for further exploration of the region. They eventually reached as far as China and Japan.
- Establishment of a global network of trade: Cabral's expedition also helped to establish a global network of trade between Europe, Africa, Asia, and America. This network of trade would eventually become the foundation of the modern world economy.
