What are the 3 steps for a cave to form?

1. Formation of soluble rock. Caves only form in soluble rocks. These rocks are typically limestone, dolomite, or gypsum. Limestone and dolomite are made of calcium carbonate, while gypsum is made of calcium sulfate. These rocks are gradually dissolved by acidic groundwater, which creates caves.

2. Development of water channels. Groundwater seeps into cracks and crevices in the soluble rock. As the groundwater flows through the rock, it dissolves more and more of the rock, creating larger channels and caves.

3. Decoration of caves. As groundwater flows through caves, it deposits minerals on the walls and ceilings. These minerals can form beautiful speleothems, such as stalactites, stalagmites, and flowstone. Speleothems can take thousands or even millions of years to form.
