Why did Hernado Cortes want to discover gold?

Hernando Cortes did not set out to discover gold, but rather to conquer and expand the Spanish Empire in the Americas. He came to America in 1519 with the goal of discovering new lands and expanding Spain's wealth and influence. Gold was not his primary objective, but he quickly realized that the Aztecs, the powerful civilization controlling central Mexico, possessed vast amounts of gold and other riches.

He captured the Aztec Tlatoani (emperor) Montezuma and used him to gain control of Tenochtitlan, the Aztec capital. Then, Cortes extracted a ransom, including a significant amount of gold, from the Aztecs in exchange for Montezuma's freedom. Although gold played a vital role in Cortes' conquest of the Aztec Empire, it was power, glory, and the expansion of the Spanish dominion in the New World that were his primary motivations.
